Kingpin claps

Juliann carefully walks up the narrow stairs to the stage.

Juliann says, "Thanks Dybs. Next up is Trispis with MUSH 101."

Juliann goes down the few steps to the seating area.

Juliann comes down the few steps from the stage.

Washington claps

Trispis carefully walks up the narrow stairs to the stage.

Trispis waits for everyone to settle into their desired halls.

Trispis says, "I realize there is a valuable topic being discussed in redhat hall."

Kingpin says, "What topic was it again?"

Trispis says, "Ever been a newbie?"

Trispis says, "Ever had a bad experience with a MUSH Administration?"

Juliann says, "You can use the +program global to see what's on the other stages"

Trispis says, "This is where MUSH 101 began."

Trispis says, "Leaving out gratuitous profanity, It began in the heart of a rebellious humanitarian with a determination to: allow rather than dictate; promote rather than hinder; assist rather than ridicule."

Trispis says, "It began as a reaction to admininistrative complacency, inconsideration, or status accumulation."

Trispis says, "It began as a one downtrodden individual with a desire to better his world, and in so doing, to better the worlds of others."

Trispis says, "It was born out of the swollen wounds of two players comparing scars."

Trispis says, "In the course of a year, we went from 2 players, to 4, to 6, to a growing young MUSH on a Win32 server (thanks Nick Gammon).... to a fullblown MUSH on a Linux box at a university in the UK (thanks scoob)."

Trispis says, "We offered opportunity for any new (or not-so-new) player to learn skills in a somewhat protected environment, with assistance (if desired), and without harassment."

Trispis says, "We've had a half dozen lectures on assorted topics (some still not yet available on the web, sorry folks, will get to it soon). And, we welcome new ideas for lectures and guest lecturers."

Trispis says, "I've shortened my speech dramatically, so that specific interests might be addressed in Q&A. However, I have on more personal comment to add."

Trispis says, "I cannot thank Javelin enough for welcoming me, MUSH 101, and the MUSH 101 family to take root here on M*U*S*H. We were destined to be without a home (after a very short year of existence). And he welcomed us (when many others simply wanted to make sure I knew I wasn't the first person with this idea). Thanks Jav."

Trispis now opens the floor to questions.

Trispis says, "Saidar had a hand up, I believe."

Saidar says, "You partially answered one of my questions, but I want to make sure I'm clear. MUSH101 is now located here? I was looking for it and couldn't find a while back. I found a Web page (with some broken links on it, just FYI), but no telnet address. Also, how have you found the response of newbies to what you're doing? (Which I think is great, BTW)."

Trispis says, "Yes. MUSH 101 is now 'The 101 Schoolhouse' located here on M*U*S*H. (thanks, I'll look into the webpage). The newbies who have actually worked through some of our logs, suggested exercises, etc... and who have learned to interact with experienced players (with some rough spots, admittedly) ... have all sang great praises about our 'project'."

Saidar thanks you for answering her question.

Trispis says, "Experienced players, however, have mixed feelings. Some say 'man, I wish they'd had one of these when I was starting out.' Others, have criticisms."

Jamie says, "what topics do you plan on covering in the near future with 101?"

Juliann reminds everyone to please wait until they are called upon :)

Trispis says, "Well, considering these lecture halls are part of the schoolhouse (yes, when you @tel'd here, you entered the schoolhous), this is part of our agenda (hosting this). I'm hoping to con Jav into another class soon. I have personal plans for a class on parents in the near future."

Kingpin says, "Do you have lectures, discussions, and so on regarding MU* Administration?"

Trispis says, "We have had requests for such topics. And have discussed them. The difficult part is finding someone with the gumption to teach such a class. Before we merged here, there were a couple 'dinos' who had offered to 'mentor' such issues, but not formally teach them."

Kingpin nods

Juliann says, "To follow up on that...you mentioned that you began MUSH 101 out of a frustration with admins. Do you teach skills and techniques for dealing with Administrators and if so, what types of things do you advocate?"

Trispis says, "erm... the skills we teach are more along the lines of: allowing the player to learn to 'get around' on a MUSH without the chaos and confusion of 'themed' regulation or 'stylized administration'. It's a very 'free learning' environment. As far as personal behavior is concerned, we do our best to reach every player who comes to us through kindness and personal attention. to let them know they're not being ignored or overlooked or 'swept under the rug'."

Dybs says, "Do you have a recurring curriculum, or do you rely soley on topics as they are raised?"

Trispis says, "We rely solely on topics as they are raised. One example is our class on 'logging/decompiling/quoting', which occured in conjunction with our merger here... so that our players could learn the necessary skills to move any 'valued possessions' to M*U*S*H."

Trispis says, "As there are no further questions, I'll turn this back over to Juliann."

Trispis says, "Thanks. (:"

Juliann carefully walks up the narrow stairs to the stage.

Trispis goes down the few steps to the seating area.

Trispis comes down the few steps from the stage.

Juliann smiles to everyone. "I;ll just take this moment to remind people of a few things. :)"

Juliann says, "Remember, at any time you can check what's on/coming up in the other room by checking +program and +time."

Juliann says, "Also, I was not aware of this earlier, but those selected for questions will be notifed via @pemit. But please, do not speak or ask a question unless/until you get a message."

Juliann says, "And do feel free to save questions to ask our speakers later at the Reception."

Juliann says, "And to followup on a comment: If people are interested in having another MUSH admins conference, and would like to speak on their particular areas of interest, contact me after the conference. I'd gladly set up another program if we get enough speakers."
